The Law Of The Double Portion
“반드시 그 미움을 받는 자의 아들을 장자로 인정하여 자기의 소유에서 그에게는 두 몫을 줄 것이니 그는 자기의 기력의 시작이라 장자의 권리가 그에게 있음이니라”(신 21:17)
많은 사람들이 성경에서 “갑절의 영의 법칙 혹은 원리”에 대해 오해합니다. 이 원리에 따라 한 남자가 여섯 명의 아들에게 자신의 유산을 나누어주어야 한다고 가정해봅시다. 그는 자신의 유산을 일곱 개의 동일한 부분으로 나누어야 했습니다. 각각의 아들은 하나씩 받게 되고, 마지막 남은 하나는 첫째 아들이 더 받게 됩니다.
장자에게 주어지는 그 특별한 부분은 “두 분깃”을 의미합니다. 그는 다른 모든 사람이 받은 것의 두 배를 받았습니다. 아버지가 가진 것의 두 배를 받는 것이 아닙니다. 두 몫은 장자의 권리이며, 상속의 표시이자, 가족 내에서 리더십과 상속권의 상징입니다. 두 몫을 받은 사람은 상속자가 되어 아버지의 권위와 이름을 이어받는 사람으로 인정받았습니다.
창세기 48:5-6은 야곱의 장남 르우벤이 두 몫을 받을 자격이 있었음을 보여줍니다. 그러나 그는 범죄로 인해 그 권리를 잃었습니다. 그 유업은 요셉에게로 넘어갔고, 요셉은 그의 아들 에브라임과 므낫세를 통해 받았습니다. 그래서 요셉의 이름을 딴 지파가 하나가 아닌 에브라임과 므낫세 두 지파가 된 것입니다.
엘리사가 엘리야에게 “당신의 성령이 하시는 역사가 갑절이나 내게 있게 하소서”(왕하 2:9)라고 말했을 때도 동일한 원리가 적용됩니다. 엘리사는 엘리야가 가지고 있던 “기름부음”의 두 배를 구한 것이 아닙니다. 어떻게 그것이 가능하겠습니까? 오히려 엘리사는 선지자의 제자들 무리에서 ‘장자’로서 엘리야의 선지자 직분을 물려받기를 요청한 것입니다.
엘리야가 불수레에 실려 올라갈 때, 엘리사는 그 장면을 목격했습니다. 엘리야의 겉옷이 떨어졌고, 엘리사가 그것을 집어 들었습니다. 요단강으로 돌아온 그는 “엘리야의 하나님 여호와는 어디 계시나이까”라고 물으며 물을 쳤습니다. 요단강은 엘리야에게 그랬던 것처럼 갈라졌습니다. 선지자의 제자들이 이를 보고 엘리사 앞에 엎드려 “엘리야의 성령이 하시는 역사가 엘리사 위에 머물렀다”(왕하 2:14-15)고 선포했습니다. 그들은 동일한 영, 동일한 예언자 직분과 권세가 이제 엘리사에게 있음을 인식했습니다.
이것이 갑절의 영의 법칙의 진정한 의미입니다. 더 많은 능력이나 “갑절의 기름부음”을 구하는 것이 아니라 동일한 권세와 위치를 물려받는 것입니다. 갑절의 기름부음 같은 것은 없습니다. 당신은 이미 당신 안에 충만하게 거하시는 성령님을 가지고 있습니다. 할렐루야!

THE LAW OF THE DOUBLE PORTION
“But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his” (Deuteronomy 21:17).
Many misunderstand what the Bible refers to as “the principle or law of the double portion.” According to this principle, let’s say a man had six sons to whom he was required to apportion his inheritance. He was required to divide his inheritance into seven equal parts or portions. Each son would receive one portion, while the extra or seventh portion was given to the firstborn.
That extra portion to the firstborn means he got the “double portion.” He got double what everyone else got; it’s not about receiving twice as much as what the father had. The double portion is the right of the firstborn, a mark of inheritance, a symbol of leadership and heirship in the family. The one who received the double portion became the heir and the one recognized to carry on the father’s authority and name.
Genesis 48:5-6 shows that Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob, was entitled to the double portion. But he lost it due to his transgression. The inheritance was transferred to Joseph who received it through his sons Ephraim and Manasseh. This is why there are two tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh, named after Joseph, instead of only one tribe.
The same principle is what Elisha referred to when he said to Elijah, “I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me” (2 Kings 2:9). He wasn’t asking for twice the “anointing” Elijah had; how is that even possible? Rather, he was requesting to inherit Elijah’s position as the leading prophet, as the ‘firstborn’ as it were, among the school of prophets.
When Elijah was taken up by a chariot of fire, Elisha saw it happen. The mantle of Elijah fell, and Elisha picked it up. Returning to the Jordan, he asked, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” and struck the waters. The Jordan parted just as it had for Elijah. When the sons of the prophets saw this, they bowed before Elisha and declared, “The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha” (2 Kings 2:14-15). They recognised that the same spirit, the same prophetic office and authority was now upon Elisha.
That’s the true meaning of the law of the double portion: inheriting the same authority and position, not necessarily asking for more power or “double anointing”; there’s no such thing. You already have the Spirit living in you in His fullness. Hallelujah!

Dear Father, thank you for granting me understanding through your Word. I walk in the knowledge of my inheritance in Christ, exercising authority and dominion as your heir. Your Word enlightens my path and causes me to function in wisdom and truth, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
